Paper covers (contemporary) are moderately scuffed at edges & worn at corners. Head and tail of spine chipped - binding exposed. Water dampness stain exhibited at head of spine/text-block. Hand-written title & personal library number labels found on spine - legible. Red speckling to exterior. Moderate chip missing at head of title page - title still legible. Chipping exhibited to the following preliminary pages iii, iv, & v - text still legible. Moderate toning and age-staining throughout text-block, & a tea-stain exhibited on p. 38. Some instances of finger-soiling. Binding is intact, but fragile. Please see photos. Francis Home (1719-1813) was a Scottish physician, and the first Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Edinburgh., known to make the first attempt to vaccinate against measles, in 1758. In 1783, he was one of the founders of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This work is early and groundbreaking in terms of agricultural plant science. Homes conducted experiments relating chemistry to fertilizers, incorporating various types of soils and plants to demonstrate the effects.
