Description We are proud to be able to offer a fine FIRST EDITION original hand colored lithograph by John James Audubon (1785-1851) from his masterful work entitled The Birds Of America. This fine work was published between 1840-44. This hand-colored lithograph comes from John James Audubon’s first octavo edition of Birds of America published from 1840 to 1844. The work was completed under the direct supervision of J. J. Audubon. The lithography and hand-coloring was completed by J. T. Bowen. Prints from Birds of America are amongst the most sought after and collectible of hand-colored American prints. The first edition was the only one to be completed using strictly hand-coloring. There were only an estimated 1000 sets published. John James Audubon (1785-1851) is perhaps the most famous of early American naturalists. Birds of America is one of the best examples of hand-colored work in America and are highly collectible. The way to differentiate first edition Audubon Bird prints from their later published brethren is that for the most part later edition prints have a lithographic background. Such is not the case with the first edition prints. We are fortunate enough to have acquired a large collection of these of these fine images and will be listing them in the ensuing weeks/months Thank you for looking and please be sure and look at our other auctions for other fine works by Audubon from the first as well as the 1860 editions of the Birds Of America. We also have other architectural, natural history plates as well as original maps, all guaranteed original. We do not use the eBay check-out system for invoicing so it is not necessary to email us at auction end. You will receive an email from Paypal letting you know the particular payment options available to you. We will also send you an email summarizing your winning bids along with one combined postal charge. We will email you this summary within 24 hours after the auction's end.
