Description: This species is one of the most beautiful, drought-tolerant, tropical plants. Desert Rose is a shrub to 2m high with a thick, bloated trunk and woody base called caudex and many thick and short branches arranged in spirals. Clusters of shiny, green, leathery leaves appear at the ends of the branches. This is a beautiful and abundant flowering shrub with large bell shaped flowers all year long. Growing Adenium from Seeds: Soak seeds in water overnight. Adenium plants need a fast draining medium to avoid root rot, the main cause of failure to thrive. We recommend a 1/1/1 mix of coco peat, sand, and small gravel, perlite or pumice stones. Potting soil or peat moss may be used instead of coco peat, but coco peat is preferred due to its natural antifungal properties. A container with drain holes should be used and a fungicide mixed at half strength should be used to soak the medium until it drains out the holes. Plant the seeds 3/8 inch ( 10 mm ) deep and cover with coco peat. Cover the container with plastic wrap or a clear lid and keep it out of direct sun or grow lights until seedlings appear. When the first seedlings are seen move the container to bright light and remove cover. Water to keep medium moist while seedlings continue to appear. Young plants can be watered twice a week as long as the medium drains quickly. Plants should be grown in full sun. Light: Full sun - sunny window.Water: Water during the spring/summer. Reduce water in the winter, but keep hydrated enough to retain its leaves.Soil: A well-drained succulent mix, with an ideal pH around 6.0 (slightly acidic).Fertilizer: Fertilize during spring and summer with controlled-release fertilizer or liquid fertilizer according to label directions. Winter hardy to USDA Zone 11. North of USDA Zone 11, plants should be grown in containers and overwintered indoors. In containers, desert rose is best grown in a loose, sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil mix in full sun. The sap of Adenium plants contains toxic cardiac glycosides and is toxic to people and pets.
