Description: AMATEUR ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS JULY, 1899. Original set of 19th Century Photographs of the Molineux Athletics meeting in Wolverhampton on Saturday, July 1st, 1899. The event served as a precursor to the Paris games of the following year, and included several competitors who went on to win Olympic medals during the following year, such as Alfred Tysoe, Charles Bennett. Tom Kiely (all gold medal winners), Patrick Lehay (Silver & bronze); as well as other notable athletes of the day, such as Denis Horgan, George S. Robertson, Adolphe Klingelhoefer, and Denis Carey. Set in original mount with handwritten captions in later glazed frame. Measures approx. 20" x just over 18.25" in total (50.5cm x 46.5cm). The upper three photographs individually measure 5.25" x 3" (13cm x 7.5cm). The lower two measure 6" x 3.75" (15cm x 9.5cm). The annotations read as follows: Photo 1: 'One mile, the Start' Photo 2: 'One mile, the Finish' Photo 3: 'Half mile, Binks Leading' Photo 4: 'One Mile at the Half Distance' Photo 5: '100 Yards, the Finish' Also provided is a later facsimile copy the event programme. Condition report: Partial foxing to the mount. The photographs remain well preserved nonetheless, and are housed in a bright, clean frame. Please see photos for further condition and content detail.
