Description: Antique Crown Crystal Depression Glass Oil Kerosene Lamp Base: Alfred Greek Key Click images to enlarge Description Presenting this antique Australian kerosene lamp base in the desirable 'Alfred' Greek Key pattern by Crown Crystal for your consideration. This very collectable lamp was produced by Crown Crystal during the Great Depression era. It was included in their catalogue (page 71) released in August of 1932. The item number was No. 89 - "Alfred" lamp with external collar. This wonderful lamp has been crafted in clear glass which displays a beautiful quality for Depression era glass. It features a very appealing faceted octagonal reservoir encompassed with a desirable 'Greek Key' band. The pedestal shaped lamp base contours superbly to a very solid and generous skirted foot. The foot features a refined beveled stepped edge which is a very beautiful touch! In ancient Greek culture, the key pattern was not just decorative but held profound symbolic meaning. It was often associated with infinity or the eternal flow of life, and sometimes symbolized unity and the bonds of friendship, love, and devotion. Crown Crystal have undoubtedly drawn inspiration for this lamp from the ancient archaeological sites that captivated the world during the late 1920's and early 1930's. Size & Weight This 'Alfred' lamp base stands 20.5cm in height and measures 16cm in diameter at its widest point on the base. Very solid piece and weighs 1.45kg. Condition Presented in excellent antique condition with no chips, no cracks and no repairs. The original brass collar (originally held in place by plaster of Paris) has detached from the lamp as pictured. It is common for the plaster to crumble with age and the collar can be easily reattached with new plaster. This will also provide peace of mind, knowing that it will now be sturdy for another 100 years. The brass collar displays wonderful patina!!! The glass remains beautifully clear and is in wonderful condition, with minimal scuffing and scratching, excepting the underside rim of the base. The inside of the reservoir remains in superb condition with no soiling, discolouration or cloudiness to the glass. As with all Depression era glass, this beautiful piece features seam lines, inclusions, air bubbles and straw-marks as cherished by collectors throughout the world. This lamp base has a continuous straw-mark on its upper facade, circling the collar. This is a common characteristic of Crown Crystal's No. 89 'Alfred' pattern and is mentioned purely for accuracy. This is a stunning example and displays exceptionally well. Its incredible condition suggests that this lamp was a display piece only.
