Description: VINTAGE DAN ZAKPAI GE MASK, LIBERIA This fine, old Zakpai Ge mask is oval and covered by red fabric decorated with black-painted details; the round eye-holes are surrounded by tin embellishments and the mask's perimeter is ornamented with native cloth. Zakpai masks were used to enforce fire prevention; the mask-wearer monitored bonfires and punished those whose carelessness may have endangered the village. If a fire was not properly attended to, the masquerader may have beaten the offender with sticks.
