Description: Pearlware Childs Miniature Toy Dollhouse 2pc Set MONASTERY ON THE HILL Hackwood Staffordshire England c.1830 This is stunning and scarce two-piece set of historical Staffordshire miniatures, c 1830, originally part of a complete children's toy transferware dinner service. The set includes a tiny plate measuring 3-3/8 inches in diameter and a square saladier or salad bowl measuring 2-1/2 inches across and 1 inch tall, all transfer printed in a rich cobalt blue with a pearlware glaze. The tiny set was finely potted and detailed, depicting a farmer and his cow walking in a pasture at the foot of a hill, with a humble cottage in the foreground and a church monastery at the top of the hill. Morning glories and lilies on a vine wind around the border. The pattern name is most commonly known as Monastery Hill , also referred to as Monastery on the Hill and/or Institution. The set is marked with an impressed 'C&H' representing William Hackwood (later Cockson & Harding) a pottery maker in the Staffordshire district of England in the early 1800s. The quality of the form and detailing of the engraved image is far superior to what would be expected on these diminutive sized pieces. The set is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Minor glaze crazing, transfer wrinkle, glaze ponding and minor firing flaws typical of these early wares. The tiny set is a pocket size work of art, and will make a fine addition to any collection of childrens wares or miniature doll house transferware. The pattern is especially attractive in blue. Offered as is, as shown. We are also other early miniature transferwares to mix and match. Please send us a note with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos.
