Description: Pair of Cast Iron Spiral Coil Courting Candle Holders w/Wood Adjuster. A courting candle is a spiral-shaped candleholder used in the 1600s–1800s to limit how long a suitor could spend with a young woman. How it worked:The father of the young woman would set the candle at a certain height in the holder. The candle's burn time was determined by the height it was placed at, similar to a timer. When the candle burned down to the top of the holder, it was time for the suitor to leave. Purpose:Fathers used courting candles to set boundaries for their daughters, teach them to respect their parents, and teach suitors to defer to the father's judgment. The more a father approved of a man, the higher he would raise the candle. This is a great addition to your primitive, rustic, vintage decor. Each measures 6 1/2" tall and 5" in diameter at base.
