DESCRIPTION OF ITEM --this is a great original large book called "Colton's Atlas of America," illustrating the Physical and Political Geography of North and South America and the West India Islands, by George W. Colton, accompanied by descriptions Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, by Richard Swainson Fisher, Md.published in New York by J H Colton and Co. 1856but what makes this especially interesting and rare is that this is the PHILADELPHIA COMMERCIAL EDITION, which has ads from the different business in the city before and after each of the maps. from full page down to 4 or so on a page, most in black and white, but a few in full color. AMAZING. this atlas starts with 15 pages on Philadelphia (stained), and then the list of maps:1. Vignette Title (an amazing scene of Native Americans looking down on the new city but it is stained and loose 2. North America ( some discolor from the newsclippings added to the opposite page and part of a section that is loose) 3. Northern America. british, russian, and danish possessions (some staining but mostly in the edges) 4. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland (some staining but mostly in the edges)5. Lower Canada and New Brunswick (some staining but mostly in the edges)6. Upper Canada Niagara district and wolf island (some staining but mostly in the edges)7,8. United States of America (some staining but mostly in the edges)there are 10 pages of info and 10 pages of ads between the US map and Maine 9 Maine (some staining but mostly in the edges)10 New Hampshire (some staining but mostly in the edges)11 Vermont (some staining but mostly in the edges)12 Massachusetts and Rhode Island (vicinity of Boston) (some staining but mostly in the edges)13 Boston and adjacent cities (some staining but mostly in the edges) and a bit of discolor on teh top 1/3 of the map from the large 1/2 page ad on the other side of the page (photo 6) 14 Connecticut (some staining but out side of the map area) 15,16 New York (vicinity of New York City, vicinity of Niagara Falls) (some staining but out side of the map area)17,18 New York and adjacent cities (double) (some staining but mostly in the edges) (see photo 7)the amazing full color and full page ad/ poster for CJ Fell & brother (photo 8) probably worth the price of admission alone, WOW WOW WOW 19 New Jersey (some staining but out side of the map area)20 Pennsylvania (some staining but out side of the map area)21 City of Philadelphia (some staining but out side of the map area)22 Delaware and Maryland (district of columbia) (some staining but out side of the map area)23 City of Baltimore (some staining but out side of the map area) and a bit of bleed from the ads on the opposite side. 24 Cities of Washington and Georgetown (light staining but out side of the map area) and a great map with the Washington Monument, Capital building and Smithsonain (photo 9) which gives you a good idea of the map on one side and an ad or ads on the opposite side, which is how every map is. JUST SO COOL. 25 Virginia (cities of Richmond, Norfolk and Portsmouth) 26 North Carolina(some staining but mostly in the edges)27 South Carolina(some staining but mostly in the edges)28 City of Charleston, City of Savannah(some staining but mostly in the edges)29 Georgia(some staining but mostly in the edges)30 Florida (florida keys)(some staining but mostly in the edges) WOW HAS THIS STATE CHANGED. (some staining but mostly in the edges)37 Arkansas(some staining but out side of the map area)38 Kentucky and Tennessee(some staining but out side of the map area)things are a bit out of order here, but all is included ?? it goes 38, 44, 41, 42, 39,40, 43 and then to 45 and back in order ?? mis-bound i guess, i think only 1000 of these were made. but this there is also a big brake in the spine in this area so perhaps someone just put stuff back wrong, i dont know. 39 Ohio (vicinity of Cleveland)(some staining but out side of the map area)40 City of Pittsburgh pa & city of Cincinnati Ohio(some staining but out side of the map area)----on the opposite side of this one is a full page color ad for A. HAWLEY & CO. --you can find this ad page alone online for $850.00 41 Indiana(some staining but out side of the map area)42 Michigan(some staining but out side of the map area)43 N. Michigan and Lake Superior--see photo 10 with the R & G A Wright perfumery ad in black and white and color you can find this page alone online for $400.00from here on this part is just connected to the rest by a thread so you can basically say it is not connected to the rest of the book. 44 Illinois (vicinity of Chicago)(some staining but out side of the map area)45 city of Chicago & city of St Louis Mo (very light staining in the margins) and the coolest ad on the opposite page (photo 11) for Mitchell & Croasdale dealers in Sperm, Shale, Lard, & Tanners Oil, Candles, Rice &c. ----a very faded one of these sold for 590.00 but the one in this book is so strong and nice. WOW WOW WOW 46 Missouri (vicinity of St Louis)(some staining but out side of the map area)47 Iowa(some staining but out side of the map area)48 Wisconsin (vicinity of Milwaukee)(some staining but out side of the map area)49 Minnesota(some staining but out side of the map area)50 Nebraska and Kansas Territories, etc( just some discolor on the edges of the page) 51 utah and New Mexico( just some discolor on the edges of the page, and brittle in that area with light 1/4 inch tearing in margins)52 California (city of San Francisco)( just some discolor/stain on the edges of the page, and brittle in that area with light 1/4 inch tearing in margins)this part is not connected to the rest of the book 53 Oregon and Washington( just some discolor on the edges of the page, and brittle in that area with light 1/4 inch tearing in margins)there is a full page black and white ad for keystone marble works S. F Jacoby & co. very cool with 5 images (i just dont have enough photos) the image has bleed to the opposite page which is info about The United States of Mexico 54 Mexico(just light discolor on the border)55 Central America (city of Aspinwall, Panama, Isthums of Panama, Nicaragua route, Harbor of San Juan) (just light discolor on the border)56 West Indies (city of Havana, Bermuda Islands)(just light discolor on the border)57 Cuba and Jamaica (porto rico)(just light discolor on the border)full page ad for Evans card, job and fancy printing, with litho of building and a early printer. so cooland then another full page ad for a printing co. but this one with some colorColbert's Envelope manufactory, printing office. 58 South America(just light discolor on the border)59 New Granada, Venezuela, and Ecuador( light staining in the border edge)a totally loose page 60 Peru and Bolivia (city of Lima)( light staining in the border edge)61 Brazil and Guayana (city of Rio Janeiro & Pernambuco)(some staining but mostly on teh edge, light tearingsome loose pages 62 Chili, Argentine Republic, Uruguay and Paraguay( see photo 12) stained in corner, and page is loose 63 Patagonia (Falkland Islands, South Orkney, South Georgia) page is loose and has edge wear. now someone added some newspaper to the page before the index and that discolored the index, and also opposite the map of North America (picture 5). an amazing book, in the first sentence of the intro it says it will be limited to 1000 copies. i have heard mention of double page ads but i dont see any in this. seems odd that someone would have removed them but left the beautiful full color ads but i dont know, this is certainly as is, but it is very rare and cool. In 1856, J.H. Colton & Co. issued a Philadelphia commercial edition of its Atlas of America, Commercial Edition." This was an atlas in which the Colton firm sold different size advertisements to be placed within the atlas, so that among the fine maps of North and South America which appeared in all their atlases, this version included numerous advertisements for Philadelphia firms. Most of these were single page advertisements with wood engraved illustrations, though a firm could pay more and get a single page "business card" illustrated in lithography or chromolithography. These are amongst the most interesting, decorative and rare trade ads of the period. These have become a rare and prized part of the history of Philadelphia prints. In the introduction to the atlas, the firm states that this edition of the atlas will be limited to one thousand copies, "and distributed gratuitously, for the interest of the advertisers therein, to leading Hotels and Steamers, throughout the country." the scale behind the item is in inches I PACK BETWEEN CARDBOARD FOR PROTECTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AS SHOWN, USE EBAYS ZOOM IN FEATURE TO GET A GREAT LOOK AT THE ITEM UP CLOSE, and email me any questions, please. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ VIEW MY OTHER ITEMS ON EBAY TERMS AND CONDITIONS Paypal users must be verified, and have a confirmed address.
