Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University in Washington, D.C. These women wanted to create an organization that would promote academic excellence, social advocacy, and public service with a strong focus on the African American community. Delta Sigma Theta, which evolved from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, was founded in response to the desire for a more politically engaged sorority. Key Moments in Delta Sigma Theta History: 1913 - Founding and Women's Suffrage Movement:- Founding: The twenty-two founders were women of courage and vision who were dedicated to using their collective strength to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to persons in need.- Women’s Suffrage March: Just two months after its founding, Delta Sigma Theta made history by participating in the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. The founders marched in the procession advocating for the rights of women, particularly African American women, who faced additional layers of discrimination. 1919 - First National Convention:- Delta Sigma Theta held its first national convention in 1919, setting the stage for its evolution into a national organization. At this convention, the structure of the sorority began to take form, establishing it as a force for public service and advocacy. 1920s - Expansion and Public Service:- The sorority expanded rapidly across college campuses in the U.S. and began focusing on educational initiatives. The establishment of its national programs aimed at improving educational opportunities, health, and the welfare of African Americans was a major focus during this time. 1930 - Incorporation:- Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930, formalizing its national presence and ability to operate as a non-profit organization focused on the betterment of society. The sorority also became a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, a collective of historically Black fraternities and sororities. 1940s - Civil Rights and Social Action:- Delta Sigma Theta strengthened its role in the Civil Rights Movement by participating in efforts to combat racial discrimination, secure voting rights for African Americans, and promote social justice.- In 1945, the organization helped advocate for the establishment of the United Nations and worked on issues of international human rights. 1950s-1970s - Continued Activism:- Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, Delta Sigma Theta worked to empower African Americans and partnered with other civil rights organizations. Members, including those such as Dorothy Height, became prominent leaders in the fight for equality.- In 1973, the Delta Research and Educational Foundation was established to further education and scholarship opportunities. 1980s-2000s - International Expansion and Major Programs:- Delta Sigma Theta expanded internationally and established global chapters in countries such as Jamaica, Germany, and South Africa.- During this period, the sorority launched several key initiatives, including the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, which focuses on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement. 2013 - Centennial Celebration:- Delta Sigma Theta celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2013 with over 200,000 members worldwide.
