Description: First edition, first state hardcover copy of The End As A Man by Calder Willingham (Vanguard Press, 1947). The author’s first novel, a dystopian “adolescent horror”, examining the male bravado of youth, power, and the dangerous cult of personality. True first state as identified by a lack of reviews on jacket, original price of $2.75, original black boards, and a lack of additional printings stated on copyright page. Jacket is protected in new archival sleeve but with some rubbing to covers and wear around the edges - including small tears, creases and chipping. Some tanning/soiling to outer edges of jacket as well. Boards a bit soiled from handling and with corners bumped. Spine is slightly slanted and binding is beginning to loosen a bit, with a few instances of mildly split binding. Hinges are secure and all pages remain attached. Small pen inscription on front endpaper, otherwise all pages are clean and unmarked though tanned. See photos for condition. Shipped Media Mail
