Description: This vintage reproduction dinner plate titled “Doctor Syntax reading his Tour” features a beautiful medium blue transfer on a white ground. The original plates were made in the 1820s by Clews, famous Staffordshire pottery. The maker of this Victorian Reproduction may have been Adams, who purchased the Clews factory in the late 1830s. This plate is late 19th century (or a little later) but is a fine example of the original Clews production. Though a bit thicker, it major clue to it’s age is the printed “ENGLAND” added to the marking on the underside of the plate. Condition: excellent except for three flea bits on the rim, made by a metal plate hold. They are too small to photograph. Also on the underside there is a light section of a transfer printed border, done in the kiln, I presume. 19.4” Diameter 1” Deep
