These devices are made with different faces for different gambling games; however, all are designed as a pocket gambling piece for a Sporting Gent or Lady to offer a spontaneous game of chance to his / her companion(s) anytime, anywhere, such as at a gambling hall, barroom, saloon, tavern, casino, horse / dog race, sporting event or leisure; and perhaps for a drink or round of drinks. The domed watch crown is plastic with very light surface scratches. This device has a printed horserace pattern with a smooth clear coating applied to the dial face. The dial face has a lot of color and detail with 8 horses with riders on a grass track with white fences. The dial is a light tan colored with a center circle with horses numbered 1-8. The dial is segmented like a roulette wheel with an outside rim with alternating win, show and place finishes. The dial has 8 racehorses that can finish in 1st to 8th place for multiple players, or use the center numbered dial for a high number winner. The outside rim can also determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place payouts. Theoretically, this gambling device could also be used with a layout for multiple bettors or with payouts for win, show or place finishes. These devices vary slightly in features, and most have a very simple in design and application, i.e., you wind the stem, and the single hand rotates and will stop on its own, with revolution speed and the number of full dial spins depending on how many times you wind the stem. The hand begins to turn as soon as the stem is wound, and usually a couple of turns will make the hand rotate. The more you wind the stem, the faster it rotates and the longer the time until the hand comes to rest for the horserace results. The stem can be wound like a standard pocket watch, and 5 twist works well. These pieces have their own idiosyncrasies, and this one has a slight whirring sound when running. Some of these pieces have slightly different mechanisms affected by the stem. This piece has a stem that when pushed will stop the moving hand. When the stem is released, the hand continues to rotate. Overall, in fine condition. These devices were made in Germany, and I believe date to around the 1950’s – 60’s. The dome ring has scratches from pocket wear. The case metal is usually nickel-plated brass with normal surface scratches. Pocket watch size 2” in diameter x 1/2” thick. weighing 2.1 ounces or 62 grams.
