They say that albums have to push forward in order to be truly great. While there is some credence to this belief, in my mind it is a bit close-minded. Jim O'Rourke's discography on Drag City offers a perfect retort, particularly in his trilogy of "Pop" albums: Eureka, Insignificance, and Simple Songs. They take a Middle-of-the-Road, "Dadrock" style and invigorate it with Jim's impeccable skill for arranging and a cynical wit in lyricism. Simple Songs in particular seems to be a nice, cohesive statement of Jim's style: whereas Eureka contained some off-kilter, subdued sections or electronic effects, and Insignificance offered noisy builds (most notably at the end of the album), Simple Songs is pared down to fundamentals. We've got standard song structures, especially catchy melodies, and a veritable orchestra that always is perfectly balanced both in terms of the mix but also the compositions. You'll often hear, as in the end of "Half Life Crisis," a surprise woodwind part appearing out of nowhere that adds the perfect color to close out a song. Or the piano melody in the chorus of "Friends With Benefits," which offers a nice upbeat groove to keep the track moving despite Jim's sentimental musings. It's perhaps Jim's most "well executed" album yet, and while it won't necessarily be everyone's favorite, it will always be one of his best.
