He became known in the newspaper El País under the pseudonym Juvenal, with which he published from 1923 to 1925. Cecilio was a boxing enthusiast, amateur radio operator, wine and liquor taster, professor, graphic humorist, illustrator, and painter. He was a painting professor at the Enrique José Varona Technical School. In June 1928, he traveled to Mexico, invited by the Mexican government and subsidized by the main newspapers in Havana. He was a disciple of Diego Rivera and graduated in Mural Painting in the same year. His production during this period is distinguished by the marked influence of Mexican muralism. He collaborated in the Mexican newspaper, Universal Ilustrado and cooperated with Cuban publications like La Semana. He returned to Cuba on August 6, 1930.
