Engel/ Temple of Disharmony, 100% original sound, no remaster! After leaving Anthrax in 1984 under circumstances he had himself to blame for, Dan Lilker formed Nuclear Assault and released a demo (“Back with Vengeance“). After reconciling with Scott Ian in 1985, Lilker became a member of the short-lived yet legendary all-star outfit S.O.D. and - due to the unexpected huge success of S.O.D.’s “Speak English or Die” album - put Nuclear Assault on hiatus. After his stint with S.O.D. was over, Lilker revived Nuclear Assault and released another demo (“Live, suffer, die“) that landed the band a deal with Combat Records. Finally, in October 1986 “Game Over“, Nuclear Assault's debut album, was released. Although the album mainly consisted of re-recordings from the demo tapes (such as “Betrayal“) and contained only a few “new“ songs (such as “Brain Death“ and “Nuclear War“), the record made a huge impact. Opening with a high-speed instrumental track (“Live, suffer, die“), “Game Over“ showcases a never before heard mixture of short hardcore/grindcore eruptions clocking in under a minute (“Hang the Pope”, “My America”) and “classic” speed/thrash metal songs (“Cold Steel”, “Stranded in Hell”). The humorous nonsense track “Mr. Softee theme”, a cover version of an ice cream commercial tune, is a welcome interlude. The track “Sin” was also an “old” song though not from the demos, but written by Lilker when he was still in Anthrax (the song was actually performed live by Anthrax during Lilker's days with the band). Being versatile musically, the lyrical concept of “Game Over” is constant highly political, critical of religion (more subtle “Nuclear War”, less subtle “Hang the Pope”), politics (“After the Holocaust”, “Vengeance”) and society (“Cold Steel”). Out of the ordinary yet characteristic is the final song, “Brain Death”, clocking in over seven minutes and somewhat “summarizing” the album. Opening with an almost two-minute long acoustic guitar intro, the song continues with trailing heavy riffs and short melodic lead guitars only to culminate in blustering core-eruptions at the end. Also included on the re-release of “Game Over” on High Roller Records (especially mastered for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel, 100% original sound, no remaster!) is the track “Lesbians”, originally featured only on the tape version of the album. Sebastian Thiel Nuclear Assault – Game Over (1986) is the debut album by the American thrash metal band Nuclear Assault. Released at a time when the thrash metal scene was exploding with energy, Game Over established Nuclear Assault as one of the more politically charged and aggressive bands in the genre. Known for their blend of hardcore punk's speed and thrash metal’s technicality, Nuclear Assault combined intense musicianship with socio-political lyrics, delivering a furious sound. Overview of Game OverGame Over was released in 1986 under Combat Records and is considered one of the definitive albums of 80s thrash metal. With ex-Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker in the lineup, the band brought technical proficiency, speed, and a sharp, biting edge to their music. The album's raw production, aggressive vocals, and chaotic energy give it a distinct underground feel while pushing boundaries both musically and lyrically. Lyrically, Nuclear Assault often tackled themes of war, political corruption, environmental destruction, and societal decay, which set them apart from some of their peers who focused more on personal or fantastical themes. The fast-paced nature of their songs was balanced by catchy riffs and blistering solos, ensuring that the album resonated with thrash metal fans looking for both intensity and substance. Musical StyleThrash Metal: Fast, riff-driven, and aggressive, Game Over is a quintessential thrash record.Crossover Influences: With punk’s fast tempos and hardcore influences, Nuclear Assault delivered shorter, more direct songs with the intensity of both punk and metal.Politically Charged Lyrics: The album frequently addresses social and political issues, reflecting the band's concern with the state of the world.Technical Guitar Work: While maintaining a raw sound, the technical precision of the guitar work, particularly in the solos, showcases the band’s musicianship.Key Tracks"Live, Suffer, Die": A short but explosive opening track that sets the tone with blistering speed and aggression."Sin": A longer, more structured track with intricate guitar work and social commentary in its lyrics."Betrayal": One of the album's standout tracks, combining fast riffs with a strong melody."Brain Death": The album’s epic, featuring a mix of fast thrash sections and slower, more atmospheric parts, showing the band’s dynamic range."Stranded in Hell": A fast, punk-influenced song with biting commentary on society’s decline."Nuclear War": A direct and intense song focusing on the threat of global nuclear conflict, a recurring theme in the band’s work.Sound and AtmosphereAggressive and Raw: The production is intentionally raw, giving the album a gritty, underground feel.Fast and Relentless: The fast tempos and aggressive riffs make the album an intense listening experience.Punk Edge: There’s a definite punk edge to Nuclear Assault’s music, with short, to-the-point songs that eschew lengthy guitar solos or overly complex structures.LegacyGame Over helped define Nuclear Assault's place in the thrash metal scene of the 1980s, particularly due to their blend of punk and metal elements and their politically conscious lyrics. The album is considered a classic in the genre, influencing many later bands in both thrash and crossover thrash scenes. The band's energetic live performances and the album's underground success ensured that Game Over became a cornerstone of 80s thrash metal. 50 Similar Artists:AnthraxOverkillTestamentExodusD.R.I.Sacred ReichS.O.D.
