OLD MASTER oil 16th 17th century CLEOPATRA aft Rosso Fiorentino EXHIBITED Geneva

Description: CLEOPATRA Large Mannerist Old Master oil on canvas after Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (Florence 1494 - Paris 1540),known as Rosso Fiorentino. Large oil on lined canvas (stretcher size) measuring 38 1/2 x 28 1/2 inches (97.8 x 72.4 cm)With photo by door to try to help put that great size in some context. The original of this painting, by Rosso Fiorentino, "La Mort de Cléopâtre" (painted 1524/27), is in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich Museum in Brunswick, Germany. But this is a very early copy! Possibly contemporaneous and certainly not a lot later, it is almost certainly 16th century. But I suppose it is possible it could be early 17th century at a pinch, so that was included in the title as a tag to connect to more possible searches. And in the absence of having the original, this was notably borrowed in it's place for a prestigious exhibition in the Musée Rath in Geneva (Switzerland) back in 2004. The exhibition was entitled: "CLÉOPÂTRE DANS LE MIROIR DE L'ART OCCIDENTAL"("CLEOPATRA IN THE MIRROR OF WESTERN ART") The BIG book by Claude Ritschard and Allison Morehead (with contributions from lots of others), that was my complementary copy of the book associated with the exhibition, will stay with the painting (see photos). Unfortunately some years back the book had a slight accident that no-one ever admitted to (I think it was coffee), so there are marks and a stain from the spillage to the bottom right corner that is also affecting the very bottom right corner of some of the pages (mainly the last few pages at the very back of the book) as well. Another perfect copy of the book could always be acquired if wanted (I have seen them for sale), but I wouldn't recommend one that's on Amazon at £929! I was also given some complementary postcards of the painting and a nice brochure advertising the exhibition that I'd forgotten about, that I've just found tucked into the book as well. If I can find them (I'm not quite sure where I've put them), the buyer is welcome to a few of the postcards, but I think I'll keep the brochure, along with my complementary ticket and invitation to the dinner held to celebrate the opening and to honour the contributions of all associated with the exhibition. It would have been a lovely excuse to have visited Geneva (I've never been to Switzerland at all), and I was an idiot not to have gone. But I didn't. The book is big (by both size and length - 438 pages) and a huge amount of work obviously went into the text. But I haven't read it myself, because it's all in French. There are a wealth of lovely quality illustrations alongside the text, though. Most are smaller, but there are about 35 full page plates, and those include the image of my painting, with the adjoining full page devoted to a discussion about the image. Photos attached show. The painting is very old, so the condition is obviously commensurate with that age. It has obviously been lined, a long time ago, and will presumably have had some work done then and over its long life. I haven't done anything significant to it, but I think it had been relatively recently cleaned and restored when I bought it, but that was over 20 years ago now. I don't think they did anything to it in Geneva, but I'm not absolutely sure of that. The condition it's in now is still as it was when exhibited in Geneva, though, and as it's been sitting here on my wall. It hasn't deteriorated in the interim and is still good to hang as it is, as it was hung in Geneva. The frame is just a narrow modern cut moulding, which might be thought a little incongruous, but which is actually what the exhibition organisers put on it and is what it was exhibited in. That has acquired a few minor abrasions since then, but it's still good and its simple modernity actually suits the painting surprisingly well. Hope you like but please come and chat if interested. Apart from anything else, this is a large painting and in this country I would have it delivered by private courier. Should there be interest from abroad, however, I would be more nervous of consigning it to a bulk international carrier, but it could be done. I've had to include prices or the listing wouldn't be seen internationally at all, but the price isn't so much the issue as security/insurance etc. There would need to be a conversation.
