Description: An interesting pair of pewter tankards dating back to the early 1800s and produced by the London based company Townsend & Compton. The tankards are of a different size but similar in design with the engraved initials J or F W aside an image of an early steam train. Both have glass bottoms but the glass has cracked. John ownsend and his son in law Thomas Compton, both pewterers were based in Fenchurch Street between 1745 & 1802 before moving operations to Booth Street, Spitalfields London.
