Description: One of White's best first moves is 1.e4. The two most popular responses for Black are 1...e5 and the sicilian 1...c5. The Open sicilian (2.Nf3 and 3.d4) may be the best approach against the sicilian. But it is very risky to give Black the long-term advantage of a central majority. You need to know an enormous amount, or you will just drift into a bad position. Enter the Bb5 approach, which scores almost as well as the Open sicilian, but it's much easier to learn and play. The idea is to delay or even omit d4. Often, White gains the positional advantage by doubling Black's pawns and then closing the position with c4 to blunt Black's bishop pair. After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5! is the Rossolimo 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+! is the Moscow variation 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 GM Kornev recommends 3.g3!
