Description: Get ready for spring with this fine bone china teacup and saucer, which are reminiscent of a lush English garden. The set was made in England and signed by Shelley, considered by many to be the best representative of the Staffordshire potteries — and perhaps the epitome of all bone china. Decorated in the Summer Glory chintz pattern, the duo features lavender, white and pink hydrangeas with green branches and soft lavender-gray fernlike fronds, all of which stand out on a slightly mottled soft pink background. Gold trim highlights the edge of the gently scalloped saucer and the handle, pedestal foot and scalloped rim of the Ripon shaped cup. The china’s delicate and semi translucent quality is revealed when the light is right, as exterior flowers peak into the cup’s creamy white interior. The cup measures 3 1/4” in diameter, stands 2 3/4” tall, and is 4 1/8” wide including the handle. The saucer is 5 5/8” in diameter and 3/4” tall. Together they weigh ~7 ounces. Backstamps indicate these pieces were made between 1945 and 1966, when the company ceased operations. Both pieces show a green mark for “Shelley” within a wide shield, with “Fine Bone China” above and “England” below. The pattern number 13381 is hand written in red on the cup, along with what looks like the letter “w” which may be the individual decorator’s mark. The “Summer Glory” pattern name appears on the saucer within a miniature, multicolored floral mark. This set is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, stains or crazing. The colors are clear and strong, and the gold accents are rich and lustrous. Minor scratching to the cup’s gold trim, moderate wear on the saucer’s rim, and light scratches in the well of the saucer (please see photos 16-17) are modest evidence of more than 50 years of beautiful service. About Shelley Bone China Beginning in the late 19th century, Shelley Potteries produced china and pottery of great beauty and diversity. Its bone china is very thin — thin enough to be translucent, similar to Irish Belleek china — and surprisingly strong. It achieved these qualities because the company’s formula had the highest percentage of ground bone of any china manufacturer. Over 15,000 patterns were applied to Shelley china. Shortly after owner Percy Norman Shelley died in 1966, the company ceased operations. Its bone china is now highly collectable.
