Description: I'm offering a First Edition hardback book published in 1902 titled, " The Cyclone of Humor " by Benjamin Franklin Crouse. Illustrated by C. B. Jackson, Muncie, Indiana. Published by Hoosier Printing Company, Printers and Binders, Muncie Indiana. This volume is more than scarce --it's currently non-existent on the net. I'm not familiar with the author stated as B. F. ( Benjamin Franklin) Crouse --however, the illustrator of this volume, C. B. Jackson (Charles Bacon Jackson ) was known as " Chic Jackson " and created "The Bean Family," comic strip which ran in the Indianapolis Star from 1913 to 1934. The popularity of the strip in the Star led to syndication in the Midwest through the Laura Leonard Newspaper Service, and from 1925 through the George Matthew Adams Service, who syndicated the strip to larger national newspapers. This book was printed by Hoosier Printing Company and I believe it must have had an extremely small press run. I decided to research Hoosier Printing a bit as I've not seen any books printed by this company. Here's what I found- Hoosier Printing Company is now called Boyce Forms / Systems. It was originally founded in Muncie in 1899 as Boyce Campbell Co. by Arthur E. Boyce and a Robert P. Campbell. Shortly after, they merged with W.H. Besak & Co., to form the Hoosier Printing Company. In 1912, Mr. Boyce acquired full ownership of the company and the business was renamed A.E. Boyce Company. A bit more background on the illustrator is as follows- Charles Bacon Jackson was born Dec. 31, 1876, in Muncie, Indiana, where he attended school and was employed on the Muncie News when it was absorbed by the Muncie Star. There he met Margaret Wagner of Springport, also employed on the newspaper, and they married on 1902. (same year the "Cyclone of Humor" was published) He was an illustrator and front page cartoonist. Jackson and his bride went to Chicago, where he studied at the art institute, and then came to Indianapolis in 1907 to become artist on the Star. At first he did Sunday feature illustrating, later developing the comic strip Roger Bean in the Indianapolis Star on April 22, 1913. This volume appears to be a collected anthology of very short humorous stories written by local folks (from local newspapers?) --possibly submitted just for this collection. If you read the author's preface (see scan below) you will see what I mean. All are written using local / regional dialects --similar to writing by Mark Twain and also one of the hallmarks of Jackson's " Bean Family " comic strips. Take a look at the pages I've scanned --along with Jackson's illustrations -- In overall good condition --cover has minor soiling --minor spotting is found inside the text (see pics) -- text is clean and bright --no writing anywhere inside this book-- 279 pages. This volume is ultra-rare, regionally historical and a genuine/unique piece of Midwestern American history. Please ask any questions you may have as my items are offered "As Is/No Returns" due to the fact that they are used, old and imperfect--FREE SHIPPING anywhere within the U.S. --no international shipping. ____________________________________________ NO ZERO FEEDBACK BUYERS PLEASE.
