Description: This seldom seen vintage 1956 Longines-Wittnauer 2220-P Explorer-style watch has a significantly aged "SWISS" only signed dial and the lume, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The nicely cut all stainless steel case shows honest wear with insignificant signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped "STAINLESS STEEL" with "LONGINES - WITTNAUER" followed by "WATCH CO. INC.,""NEW YORK,""GENEVA MONTREAL,""STAR W. C. CO.,""STAINLESS STEEL,""2220-P" and "3084277" stamped on the inside of the case back. The crystal shows scratching. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss "LONGINES WATCH Co." and "10021781" stamped 19A automatic movement runs strong and keeps accurate time. After winding the sharply threaded, non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had an approximate 38 hour power reserve. Given that this watch is more than 65 years old and considering the movement's unknown service history (there are a few visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.This watch measures approximately 33.5 mm excluding the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 7 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 9.5 mm. Given the vintage nature of this watch and considering the movement's unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended.
