Description: Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a rare and unique older Turner 101A ribbon / dynamic microphone with an all metal satin chrome body and period matching stand. This is basically The Holy Grail of Turner mics and was their top of the line studio mic in the 1940's. It has a very modern, industrial look to it and it's quite massive in size and weight. Certainly one of the most outrageous designs in American microphone history. Similar to The Shure 55 "Fatboy" but different in many ways. This mic is extremely large and heavy and will stand out just about anywhere it's displayed. It would make an excellent candidate for a rebuild as it's 100% complete inside and out. The Turner 101 series was a very advanced and expensive microphone utilizing both a ribbon and dynamic element giving the mic a true cardioid pattern. The cost of these mics is a factor in why you see so few around as only a person in the 1940's or studio with deep pockets would have purchased one of these. Far more expensive than the typical dynamic mic of that time. Pic # 2 shows this very mic and the variants sold at the time. Turner eventually replaced the 101 series mic in the late 1940's with the 77 Turner series mic which was just as large and spectacular. The Turner 77 also utilized the dual ribbon / dynamic element arrangement but the design of the Turner 77 was far more elegant than the Turner 101 series mics. The 101 series looks like something Franken Steins monster would have used had he been a musician. It just has that aggressive vibe to it. Both the 101A and 77 had a uni-directional pattern blocking out most background noise. It should be noted that this mic still has it's original ribbon and dynamic element. Again, the internal components are 100% complete and look excellent but the mic is not currently working. I suspect it's a wiring issue or something simple but I have very little experience with these mics and would suggest having it sent to ENAK based out of New Jersey. Those guys could trouble shoot and fix this mic for a reasonable price. It's very rare that both the ribbon and dynamic element would both stop working so I have to assume it's another issue altogether. I'm limited in my knowledge of these model mics as I have only had a few of them over the past 12 years. The 101C was the most expensive models with the rear switch. This mic isn't physically perfect but it's pretty darn close with an absolute minimum of wear. I would give a this mic a very conservative 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. Just a few small scuff marks. The body is free of dents, fractures or engravings. The mesh grills are dark and evenly colored being free of holes or rips. The front and rear grille are free of dents. The mic was never dropped however. The joint mechanism works perfectly with lots of tension allowing you just the right angle needed. The Turner badge looks really nice too and completely legible. This Turner 101A has the older 3 pin screw on attachment making it easy to find a cable to operate the mic as the Turner 101 series used the same style cable as the Shure 55 and 55S model mics. This mic will screw onto any stand you may have though one is provided. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE... The stand is a rare cast iron Marsland / Kitchener model that is even rarer than the mic itself. It's a 1930's / 40's era design with a heavy and thick cast iron base that suits the mic well and makes an excellent platform providing good stability due to it's heavy weight. It has a chrome 4 inch riser with original black paint. The stand is about 4 pounds in weight and shows typical lite wear. Very lite corrosion and has the 4 new felt pads on the bottom to keep it from scratching any surface it rests on. Please let the pictures be your guide. The mic and stand together is roughly 9 pounds. Total height and width is 12 inches tall X 5 inches wide. This is a very impressive combination that will surely draw attention anywhere it sits in the house, office or studio. You'll be very hard pressed to find one nicer and it's worth every penny I assure you. Wouldn't cost too much to get this operational again as well. Again, ENAK out of New Jersey can do the job right. And as with all my items... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period. Check my rating. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS are welcome as well. Buyer must pay within 24 hours or an unpaid case will be opened and item relisted. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping. If you have any questions feel free to ask and...thanks for looking.
