Description: For sale here is a great looking and hard to find early 1920's Soviet Russian Bolshevik Visor Cap. I believe this cap is from the 8th Cavalry Division 44th Regiment, and is a Model 1919 cap. The star appears to be an early to mid 1920's version. This cap was likely in an unworn state when the Soviet Union collapsed and was heavily washed to make it look older and more collectible. This would explain the fading to the red body of the cap and the washed out black piping. However, the cap is original, and is in extremely good condition. The cap features a brass enameled star with hammer and cycle. The star does have chips on the five o'clock and 9 o'clock arms. The brass shows a heavy and mellow patina. The cap has a thin black leather chin strap that is held in place by two brass pin on buttons that show quite a bit of patina. The actual visor or bill of the cap appears to be made of pressed paper, and it shows some age, finish loss, and crazing, but is stiff and has the proper shape. The band of the cap is made of a blue felt material that shows some fading and apparent rubbing. The body of the cap is made of a similar red felt type material, and again, shows fading, light wear and soiling, and more apparent rubbing. The piping now appears to be gray, but was likely once black for the 8th Cav 44th Regiment. The piping appears to be the same felt material. This felt does not appear to be wool, but seems almost like a smooth cotton with some nap to it. Inside, the cap shows only minor wear. The cap has a waxed canvas sweatband that is fully attached. The cap is fully lined in dark gray smooth cotton. There are multiple markings in the dome of the cap including the number 991. stamped in white paint. There is also a number 1116 stamped in black paint. There is also a partial round stamping that appears to have the number 53 in it, but this might be a 58. There is also an illegible partial stamping that is likely maker information. The majority of the wear in the cap is in the front, and the sweatband shows some old mildew and staining from wear. The cap is small, but not tiny. I wear a 7 3/8, and it will sit on top of my head, but it should probably come down further, so i am guessing that this fits like a 7 1/8 or a 56 or 57. This is a beautiful and hard to find cap. Even with the artificial aging from the early post Soviet days, this is a rare cap. Please see my other eBay store at Cadencemiltaria2 for more great items.
